Why Knowing More Isn’t Making Us Wiser?

Image
This is a classic comparison we’ve all heard. Knowledge is undoubtedly better than ignorance, but we also instinctively know that wisdom holds far greater value. Knowledge is the foundation upon which wisdom is built. Knowledge is about knowing the what, when, where, and how. We now have more access to knowledge than any generation before us. A quick Google search, a social media post, a YouTube video, or a book can all deliver it instantly. Most of us are flooded with trivia, far more than we can ever realistically use. And yet, we’re constantly chasing more knowledge, often like addicts, driven by curiosity or the fear of missing out. Wisdom is about understanding and judgment. The why and when to. It’s the ability to apply knowledge in real-life situations. We often recognize wisdom in mature or elderly individuals. Our previous generations seemed to have wisdom in abundance, even with far fewer sources of information. This is because wisdom is less about quantity and more about d...

Feeling Stuck? It’s Not Just the Job

Image
No one likes traffic jams. Even those who enjoy traveling, or those who like sitting around, none of them do. Everyone is frustrated by them. What is so bad about being stuck in traffic? Unlike traffic police, for whom being in traffic is part of the job, for everyone else, commuting is just a means to a greater purpose: reaching a destination, whatever that may be. This is plainly obvious to all of us. We have goals in life, places where we want to see ourselves in the future. For many, work or a job isn’t a passion but simply a means to achieve a larger goal. Over time, we get entangled in our jobs to the point where our entire life begins to revolve around them. We have friends from the office, a promotion we aspire to, and a daily social life that is separate from our family. We end up forgetting that it all started as just a means to an end, which has now become an integral part of our lives, one we never consciously chose. Means vs Goals Consider the life of a typical wildlife ph...

Understanding Confidence

Image
"Confidence" is a word people hear, use, or try to display often, but it’s not well understood. If we ask a search engine, we get the definition: “the feeling that you are sure about your own abilities, opinions, etc.” People may disagree on who is confident versus who is overconfident, but they almost always recognize when someone appears confident. Somehow, when we see it, we just know it. If you ask an honest, confident person how they gained their confidence, they likely won’t have a clear answer. We do know it's an attractive quality, and most people want to either have it or at least appear to. For some, it seems to come naturally; for others, not at all. A confident person tends to have the following characteristics: They are composed. They speak clearly and directly. They appear authentic. They command respect and exert influence. They remain graceful in conflict. Everyone wants to be confident. To achieve that, many try to mimic these traits and most often fail....

High Agency

Image
This buzzword, making rounds across podcasts, is essentially described as the power to shape own lives and outcomes rather than being controlled by external factors.  People with high agency Take initiative in solving their problems. Take responsibility for their actions. Believe in their ability to influence their environment. It is fairly obvious what high agency means. However, the underlying factors that lead to high agency are not always apparent. Let’s explore some of these related factors. Intelligence This refers to the ability to understand, learn, and think. Intelligence helps us break down complex problems into smaller, manageable parts and think through or evaluate them at a deeper level. It should not be confused with credentials, test scores, or memory prowess. There is no definitive indicator of intelligence, not even IQ. However, most people possess the basic intelligence required for daily life. The difference between high and low intelligence often comes dow...

Uncertainty

Image
The past is established; however, the future is always uncertain. Around 18% of Indian adults suffer from anxiety-related disorders, a number even higher in developed countries. At the root of this lies uncertainty, driven by our evolution-shaped thought processes. Humans have evolved by learning patterns and responding to situations; insights are embedded not only in our firsthand experiences but also in those of our ancestors, passed down through our genes. Unlike other powerful predators, our survival depends on thinking, predicting, strategizing, and executing. Although modern life no longer demands daily survival, our minds are still wired the same way. Since uncertainty is all around us, our minds instinctively try to predict outcomes. These may involve wishful thinking around careers, relationships, health, entertainment, and more. But these non-survival uncertainties are often the root of distress and anxiety. We don’t just suffer from uncertainty; we also unintentionally impos...
